Why bother with a survey?
the short answer
Surveys are expensive so you might be tempted not to bother with a closer examination by a Chartered Surveyor of the property you’re thinking of buying. You can look the property over yourself, and this can give you some idea of its condition, but there’s no doubt that a trained eye will show you all the problems which you won’t find on your own.
Forking out for a survey might seem like a lot of money at the time, especially when legal fees, stamp duty and other costs seem to be never ending, but you’ll kick yourself when you have to pay out thousands of pounds for major repairs you didn't know about before you bought the property.
Commissioning your own survey is the simple, economical way to avoid unpleasant and costly surprises. You can use your surveyor's report to renegotiate the price.
